After spending the final months of 2022 travelling and co-writing across North America, Hazel Mei has returned to Meanjin with her newest empowering single.

Charming yet sarcastic, Hazel’s witty internal dialogue is interwoven through ‘Don’t Trust Them’ as she highlights a duality of power. To begin with, the track discusses this power imbalance before shining light on the unexpected ways our actions hold power every day. There’s an irony in the sweet-sounding tone of her voice as she uses humour to guide you on a journey from bitterness to empowerment.

Hazel Mei explains “Sometimes when you’re chatting to your friends about current issues, it’s easy to deflect from your frustration with humour. I wanted to showcase this commonly used reaction in the song, while still bringing attention to the very often abuse of power we see every day.”

The carefully crafted track mirrors the song's tongue-in-cheek introduction before transforming into something more hard-hitting. Swinging, shiny guitars turn up the grit, sweet glockenspiel embellishments become expansive slide melodies and doo-bop backing vocals switch to a ghostly choir. In true Hazel Mei fashion, you are led on a tour of her own introspection, as she invites you to explore and share your own.

I really enjoy this song; I personally love the swing feel to it. It is a very well written song with a catchy melody.
